LSS Hints: Processing Messages

Your Task List on the Desktop will display messages for you to address under the Messages heading.  To view messages on the Task List, click on the Desktop sidebar button.  If you are in the Practice List, this will take you directly to the Task List.  If you are in a patient's chart when you press the Desktop sidebar button, you will first be taken to your Practice List, and then can press the Desktop sidebar button again to go to the Task List.

The Task List will be divided into groups.  If there are entries under a heading, a plus sign will appear in front the the heading name.  Clicking on the plus sign will expand that group of entries on the Tasklist.  If there is a minus sign in front of the heading name, the list for that heading is already expanded.  Clicking on the minus sign will collapse that heading.

When processing a message, you can perform several actions:
  • Entering orders, i.e refilling medication from the AOM, ordering medications from the AOM, and CPOE
  • Forwarding a message to give another provider information about that message.
  • Routing a message for another user to act on.
  • Closing the message to remove the message from you tasklist on the desktop.

Route: This sends the message on to another user, which could be a nurse or a provider.  A routed message can be acted on by the recipient (orders, editing, routing or forwarding).  To route the message, open up the message detail screen by highlighting the message to be routed, and then clicking on the View Detail footer button.  If you are going to route this message to your nurse or another user, click on the blue Edit icon in the Message window to enter any message you which to convey to the receiver of the message.  Change any other information as necessary, then click on the Route footer button.

When you press the Route footer button, a popup window appears to let you select a user to whom to route the message.  Click on the To field of the Route popup window to select the recipeint from the list displayed.  You can also forward a copy of the menu to another provider by clicking on the CC field in the Route popup window.  When you have selected the correct recipients, click on the OK button in the popup field to send the message.

Forward: This sends an information only message to another provider.  Messages cannot be forward to nurses.  When a provider receives a forwarded message, the only action that can be performed is to Acknowledge the task, which removes the message from their tasklist.  To forward a message, click on the Forward footer button.  This brings up the Forward Message window.  Click on the To field, to select the provider who will receive the forwarded message.  When the correct recipient is selected, then select the OK button to forward the message.

Close Task: This completes the message from the tasklist on the Desktop.  Messages can be edited before they are closed, and these changes will be saved the EMR.  Be sure you have completed all the work associated with this message, such as calling in a prescription, calling the patient, etc., because once a message is closed, that message and the information it contains will be removed from your Task List, and will be unretrievable from the Task List on the Desktop.  You can still view the message in the Practice Notes function, but you will be unable to make changes to the message.  After clicking Close Task, the current message will be removed and the next message will be automatically opened.

Acknowledge: This is performed only by providers on messages that are forwarded to them.  When a task or message is acknowledged, it is removed from the provider's desktop or tasklist.  To acknowledge a task, click on the Acknowledge footer button to acknowledge the task and remove the task from the tasklist.
