Hints: Importing List of Vocabulary Entries

You can customize your vocabulary in several ways.  Previous posts have described how to do this manually.  For instance, we described how to get Dragon to output the text

Lungs clear, with equal breath sounds, no rhonchi, no wheezes

when you dictate "lungs OK".  This was done by manually entering this change in the vocabulary, using the Vocabulary Editor.  You open the Vocabulary Editor by selecting Words->View/Edit from the Dragon menu.

There is an easier way to enter multiple new words into the vocabulary, by importing a text file into the Dragon vocabulary.

To do this, create a text file with Notepad.exe by selecting Programs->Accessories->Notepad from Windows Start menu.

Then, enter in the new words for your vocabulary.  The format is as follows:

• Each entry is on a separate line
• The first text entered is the written form of the word
• The written form of the word is followed by a backslash without spaces "\"
• The spoken form of the word is entered immediately after the backslash.

 Here is an example of entries in a text file that you can use: (Remember, the written form appears first and then the spoken form).

Sanford Medical Center Worthington\WRH
Sanford Medical Center Worthington\SMC
Sanford Medical Center Worthington\SMCW
Avera Worthington Specialty Clinic\WSC
Avera Worthington Specialty Clinic\AWSC

After type in these entries into a text file, save the file to your Documents folder.  Save it as a text file with the extension (.txt), and remember the name.

Now, select Words->Import from the Dragon menu to open the Add Words from Lists window.


Check the Preview the List of Unknown Words box.
Click the Next button.

Click the Add File button.

A window should appear allowing you to browse for the file you just created.  Pick this file and select Open in the file window.

The file will now be listed in the Add Words from Lists window.  Click the Next button again.

The window will process the file and say "File Analysis is Complete.  Click Next to Continue"

Click the Next button again.  The window will tell you how many words were added to your vocabulary.  If you checked the Preview box at the beginning of this process, the words will now appear in the window.  You can unselect any of the words you like at this time.  Click the Next button.

If you check the preview box at the beginning of the process, you will now be given a chance to train your new words.  Select any words you want to train and press the Train button.  Dragon will help you train the words.  When this is complete, press the Next button again.

Click the Finish button.  If another window appears, press the Close button.

Save your changes by selecting Dragon->Save User Files from the Dragon menu.

You may have to train these words to improve the recognition accuracy.

Now, when you say WSC, Dragon should enter Worthington Specialty Clinic.  If you say WRH, Dragon should enter Sanford Medical Center Worthington.
